Bringing You On A Journey To Discover And Protect Asia Pacific's Biodiversity
The Greatest Danger To Our Future Is Apathy
— Dr. Jane Goodall
Welcome to Eko-Eko — a movement that seeks to highlight and encourage action for the preservation of the incredible biodiversity in the Asia Pacific region. Working with local wildlife and nature photographers, Eko-Eko aims to give a face and a voice to some of the most unique and magnificent living beings of this region and the landscapes they call home. Roots & Shoots Malaysia
Together, we change the world

EDUCATE
Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is a youth-led action programme aimed at young people of all ages.

The programme was founded in 1991 by Dr Jane Goodall under the Jane Goodall Institute, and it promotes the values of compassion and respect for all living things, as well as intercultural understanding and solidarity among all peoples.
ENGAGE
Roots & Shoots empowers young people to create positive change for people, animals and the environment, by providing the tools needed for them to initiate, and lead, projects and campaigns that make a difference.
EMPOWER
Beginning with 12 students in Tanzania who wanted to help solve the problems in their local community - the Roots & Shoots programme is now a global movement, with over 150,000 active groups in over 130 countries.

Roots & Shoots Malaysia was established in January 2015. Today, we have over 10 active groups in various schools... and growing fast!

About Eko-Eko
Our quest to bring natural wonders to your fingertips

Asia Pacific is home to many ancient cultures, dramatic landscapes, modern cities, a plethora of languages and religious beliefs, as well as some of the oldest rainforests in the world, desert plains, grasslands, mountain ranges, mangrove estuaries, volcanic islands, and a myriad of life forms.

This region contains 7 out of the world’s 17 most biodiverse nations with an abundance of life forms that make up an intricate web of life. So great is this wealth of biodiversity that new discoveries are constantly being made while a large number of species remain unstudied and are still classified as ‘Data Deficient’ by the IUCN.

Dr Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots groups from Australia, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan have pulled together various images from local wildlife photographers to shine a spotlight on some of the incredible living beings that call this region ‘home’ here at Eko-Eko. It is our hope that by highlighting this abundant wealth of biodiversity, more people will become aware of the existence of some of these amazing creatures and be encouraged to get to know them better, as well as to volunteer in various activities to protect them and their fragile habitats.

Our Approach
Eko-Eko is a project that aims to realise the ethos of Dr.Jane Goodall. In the world of conservation, whilst there is a great deal of knowledge for the “head”, a connection to the “heart” is required to inspire care, leading to positive action. Eko-Eko addresses the problem of a lack of environmental consciousness and action amongst the public with its 2-stage approach. The first stage connects the “Head to the Heart” by creating inspiring content which elicits an emotional response from the audience, whilst the second approach connects the “Heart to the Hand” through the creation of an active community of Malaysians who joins our volunteering programmes.

At the moment, there is very little knowledge within the general public of the wonders of our environment, the sheer scale of our biodiversity, and the important role it plays in all our lives. Although much research has been done, much of this information remains hard to access and difficult to understand for the public. As a result, the general public who have some awareness find they have few avenues to contribute directly to the protection of our flora and fauna. And for the rest, apathy sets in.

The protection and conservation of biodiversity necessarily requires the combined efforts of government agencies, NGO’s, corporations and civil society. Whilst we rely on wise decisions being made by policy-makers (the “top down” approach), Roots & Shoots feel that, of equal importance, the general public should be informed and actively participate in creating a “demand” for well-thought-out decision-making by powerful authorities and large corporations alike. To that end, we must reach out to both the HEADS and the HEARTS of the public, educate them on important issues of biodiversity, and provide the opportunities for them to contribute directly. When we have a ground swell of caring people willing to stand up for our Nature and Biodiversity, who are well-informed and care enough to speak up, then we may look forward to a world that is balanced in both its desire to grow economically, and far-sighted enough to understand that we need to have a new relationship with Nature in order to build a safe and sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.

I would like to warmly congratulate Dr Jane Goodall, as well as the Roots and Shoots groups from Australia, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan for shining a spotlight on the richness of the biodiversity found in the Asia Pacific region, through their inspiring Eko-Eko project.

In "The Book of Hope", Jane shares that in order to make a meaningful difference, hope must be coupled with action. This is a timely reminder that genuine change can and indeed should take place, and not only through the efforts of those few outstanding people like Dr Jane Goodall, but rather from the actions of us all. It is through our combined efforts, however large or small, by the young and the old, from all corners of the world, that we will one day change the world.

I am very encouraged to see that Roots and Shoots Malaysia is living up to this ethos. Their Eko-Eko project aims to bring positive change to our society, and to provide opportunities for us to learn and contribute to this goal. By showcasing the incredible beauty of nature in our part of the world, it aims to awaken in us the love for our planet, and to stir us into action to make a positive impact on our environment.

I would like to call on all, and especially on our youth, to participate in the volunteering activities that are planned. This will enable us to develop valuable life skills and foster meaningful friendships, and will ultimately empower us to bring change to our local communities. Even more, such activities serve to build character and to shape our outlook with a perspective that I hope will remain with us, as we navigate the future challenges that we will all have to face.

Heartfelt appreciation goes to all the photographers who contributed, as well as to the many volunteers working behind the scenes to make Eko-Eko a reality. I wish Roots and Shoots every success in this laudable project.

JANE GOODALL, PH.D., DBE, UN MESSENGER OF PEACE
Hello this is Jane Goodall. I want to congratulate everyone who’s worked on this Eko-Eko exhibition. It’s a project that originated with Roots & Shoots Malaysia and was made richer and more diverse as a result of collaborating with Roots & Shoots groups from four other regions Taiwan, Singapore, India and Australia. I’m really sad I can’t be there in Malaysia for the opening ceremony but I send you a message from the UK. I have seen many of the photographs and I want to say a huge thank you to all the photographers who’ve contributed their magnificent images of Asian animals. I know a good deal about wildlife photography, about the time and patience required to get the perfect shot. Often too, photographers have to work in really challenging environments.

So many people forget these days that we’re part of the natural world. That in fact, we depend on it for our very existence. But we depend on healthy ecosystems and they’re made up of a complex web of interconnected plant and animal species. We must work hard to protect this biodiversity. People are most likely to help conserve things which they love. I’m sure these photographs and the accompanying stories will inspire visitors and that they’ll feel a sense of wonder for the amazing diversity of the animals and plants of our environments. We must work together to protect the natural world. Scientific knowledge on its own isn’t enough to motivate people to take action to save this beautiful world. We need a sense of wonder and reverence. That’s important too because only when head and heart work together in harmony can we attain our true human potential. I’m hoping that many who visit this exhibit will want to join the Lend A Hand Programme as a volunteer so that they can make their contributions to protecting the environment. Together we can and together we will make this a better world for all life. Thank you.

I would like to congratulate Roots & Shoots for embarking on this ambitious project of sharing the immense wealth of biodiversity in Malaysia with members of the public here at Eko-Eko.

As one of the 17 mega-biodiverse nations of the world, Malaysia is blessed with an abundance of life - from the smallest single cell organisms to large elephants and towering trees. Some of these wonders are endemic to Malaysia, which makes it all the more important for us to protect them and their habitats.

These ecosystems are a source of life for all living things, providing us with fresh water, clean air, fertile soil, and plant pollinators - all the vital ingredients that give life. It is my hope that all Malaysians will be able to gain a better understanding of the tremendous biodiversity in our country and the region, as well as to take action and volunteer to improve the state of our environment for the benefit of all living creatures.

Yayasan Hasanah as an impact based foundation, have always emphasized on the need to have an outcome outlook leading to impact creation of all projects that we are supporting. Thus, building long-term collaborative efforts in order to achieve maximum impact and sustainable results is vital. We are especially excited to see that Eko-Eko has grown from a national platform to a regional effort with the participation by Roots & Shoots groups from Australia, India, Singapore and Taiwan.

We look forward to supporting the efforts of Dr Jane Goodall and her work to involve more youths in the environmental and conservation movement in Malaysia and the region to make a better future for all.

Thank you.
